Wildfires and Earthquakes are an inevitable part of our natural world in California. Since we can not prevent either one, the best we can do is to be prepared for when they occur.
Altadena has experienced many fires over the years; our most recent, The Bobcat Fire (2020), The Station Fire (2009) and the Altadena/Sierra Madre fire (1993).
Map Your Neighborhood
is a program meant to educate neighbors and prepare neighborhoods to be
self-sufficient during a disaster.
A disaster (opposed to an emergency) is a situation in
which 911 and other public services are overwhelmed and unable to answer or
respond to calls for help. Individuals and neighborhoods need to be prepared
and able to help themselves and each other for days or weeks.
Local program
volunteers conduct meetings for neighborhood groups (generally 18 – 20
households) to provide information on how to prepare ahead of time, along with
a step by step process to evaluate their homes & neighborhood after a
disaster. This includes how to organize teams to deal with immediate needs,
such as injuries, fire, and communications, and how to be self-sufficient to
survive and recover more quickly.
We are fortunate to have a number of
neighborhood organizers in the Canyon Crest Conservancy/Meadows area. They can
provide you with a wealth of materials and resources to help you prepare. To
